Association between nutritional status and dengue infection: a systematic review and meta-analysis
No consistent results were found for the association between the nutritional status and dengue infection.
The aim of this systematic review was to determine the association of nutritional status with the variety of dengue infection and in dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Thirteen studies were included (5 from Indonesia, 4 from Thailand, 2 from Vietnam, 1 from India, 1 from El Salvador). Meta-analysis found no significant association between the DHF group and DSS group in malnutritional or overweight/obesity patients. Patients with malnutrition had a significantly inverse relation between dengue fever and DHF and malnourished children had a statistically significant negative correlation between dengue virus infection and healthy children. Patients with normal nutrition status, had a significantly negative relationship between DHF and DSS groups. Individual analyses were based on small numbers of studies and therefore the results should be treated with caution.
