The addition of an aminoglycoside to a beta lactam does not improve the clinical efficacy achieved with the beta lactam alone. However, the combination therapy of an aminoglycoside and a beta lactam was associated with an increased risk of renal damage and high cost in resource poor setting therefore should be discouraged.

Infections caused by bacteria and requiring hospitalization are a leading cause of preventable death. The beta lactam antibiotics and the aminoglycosides kill bacteria by different means, therefore there combination maybe a more effective treatment. This review aimed to compared intravenous treatment with a beta lactam versus treatment with a beta lactam plus an aminoglycoside, to establish effectiveness and safety.
