55 studies of predominantly low quality suggest that chlorpromazine reduces relapse and improves mental health, symptoms and functioning in patients with schizophrenia. However, there are side effects of chlorpromazine associated with its use and its use should be judicious.

The main treatment for the symptoms of schizophrenia is antipsychotic drugs. Chlorpromazine was one of the first drugs discovered to be effective in the treatment of schizophrenia. It remains one of the most commonly used and inexpensive treatments, however it also has serious side effects. The aim of this review was to perform an update and further establish the effects of chlorpromazine compared with placebo, for the treatment of schizophrenia.
