Ebola Virus Infection: overview and update on prevention and treatment
A comprehensive literature search was done of publications from 1993 to 2015 to provide an update on the 2014/15 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak and to review progress in prevention and treatment strategies. 156 studies were identified and used.
The review covers virology, epidemiology, human transmission and the clinical syndrome. Laboratory tests needed to diagnose EVD are described including newly developed rapid antigen detection tests and nucleic acid detection (NAT) tests. The Therapy section includes supportive care, targeted antiviral compounds/drugs, immunotherapy, and Ebola vaccine candidates. An assessment of future directions is also made.
