Efficacy of chlorine solutions used for hand hygiene and gloves disinfection in Ebola settings

Summary: This systematic review was done to assess the comparative efficacy of chlorine solutions (CS) for hand hygiene (HH) or disinfecting gloves versus alcohol-based handrubs or other antisepsis products. Very limited and very low-quality evidence was found for the use of CS, and strategies to use alcohol-based handrubs or soap and water are recommended.
A wide search and checking relevant reference lists yielded no study on the topic in question, or on HH or glove disinfection to reduce the transmission of filovirus or enveloped viruses among health workers. Studies on HH used a wide range of chemical products and different exposure times, giving conflicting results. No research was found on CS for glove disinfection.
