There is no evidence available from randomised controlled trials to inform on optimal non-surgical treatment or on the relative effects of surgical compared with non-surgical treatment for patella fractures. If surgery is chosen, there is insufficient evidence to determine which surgical intervention provides the best result.

Fractures of the patella account for 1% of all adult fractures. The management of these fractures, which can be surgical (such as tension band wiring) or non-surgical (such as cast or brace immobilisation), varies widely. This review aimed to assess the effects (benefits and harms) of different non-surgical interventions, of surgical versus non-surgical treatment, and of different surgical interventions.
